The Russian “Zapad” military grouping has released a video claiming to show its troops near the railway station in Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi.

A video has emerged in the Russian information space that is purported to show Russian military personnel near the railway station in Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, Kharkiv region.

The footage was circulated by the “Zapad” grouping of Russian forces. It shows two Russian servicemen standing in front of the railway station, while the building itself appears to be almost completely intact.

There is one problem: the station’s actual condition is completely different.

Photographs taken in October 2026 show that the building has sustained significant damage as a result of the fighting. This discrepancy is one of the key indications that the footage released by the Russians cannot be genuine, up-to-date video recorded at the location.

There is another detail: the behavior of the servicemen in the footage. As they move, their silhouettes and certain elements of the image change unnaturally, which may indicate the use of generative AI technology.

The footage’s apparent artificial nature was noticed not only by Ukrainian sources. According to local media reports, the fabrication was also spotted by some Russian Z-channels.

At the same time, this video alone cannot be used to conclude that Russia has full control over Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi. As of the end of September, Russian sources themselves were reporting that fighting was continuing in the area.

But there is another telling point: instead of reliably documenting events on the ground, Russian propaganda now has the ability to create the image it needs with the help of AI.

And this time, the technology failed — the real railway station turned out to be more convincing evidence than a generated “victory.”
