Between the Leclerc and the Tank of the Future: Pan-European Company Unveils a New Armoured Vehicle Concept
KNDS has presented its CAPINT tank concept, intended as an interim replacement for France's Leclercs until next-generation vehicles enter service.
According to the text of the arms consortium’s presentation release, published on KNDS’s official portal, this joint venture between two armoured vehicle manufacturers positions itself as Europe’s leader in main battle tank design, known as the architect of the world’s best-known tanks in this class — the Leclerc and the Leopard.
In this sector, the company is known for owning every one of the leading elements of a tank system: firepower, protection, counter-UAV capabilities, mobility and digitalisation. The design of the CAPINT armoured system is built on precisely this foundation.
CAPINT (CAPacité INTermédiaire, or “interim capability”) is a French national project aimed at strengthening the French army’s main battle tank capabilities and paving the way to the MGCS (Main Ground Combat System). CAPINT will include a set of capabilities enabling it to meet new battlefield requirements for firepower, C-UAV protection, an open digital architecture and connectivity with robotic wingmen.

“This will be more than just a single tank; it will be a multi-platform system built around a central tank axis and robotic drone wingmen, with an architecture and open digital core that will provide scalability and adaptability,” the Franco-German consortium stressed.
Writers for the defence journal TWZ (formerly known as The War Zone) have noted how timely this project is. In their view, the development comes as France recognises the need for a Leclerc successor before the next-generation Main Ground Combat System becomes available.
According to TWZ, this joint Franco-German programme is complex and already facing delays, while Europe as a whole is increasingly aware of the need for capable tanks and other armoured vehicles as the threat from Russia grows and confidence in US military support declines.

The central platform of this KNDS proposal is based on an improved KNDS Deutschland chassis derived from the Leopard 2 A8. It is fitted with a 1,500 hp diesel engine offering an excellent power-to-weight ratio for enhanced mobility, and with the KNDS France ASCALON turret: unmanned, low-profile and equipped with the state-of-the-art 120 mm ASCALON smoothbore automatic cannon.
ASCALON represents a revolutionary approach: a weapon family designed to meet the needs of high-intensity combat, introducing a scalable weapon architecture capable of moving from the current NATO-standard 120 mm calibre to improved performance and even larger calibres.
Thanks to fully mature technical solutions, this system has already fired around 300 rounds. This year, in January 2026 in Portugal, KNDS carried out the world’s first successful dynamic firing from a main battle tank demonstrator equipped with a remotely operated turret.
ASCALON offers a highly competitive solution combining outstanding combat performance with an optimised life cycle and acquisition costs. Fully compatible with all NATO-standard 120 mm ammunition, it allows customers to maintain and use their existing stocks, ensuring long-term interoperability.
Designed with scalability in mind, ASCALON opens the way to a full weapon family that will support evolving operational requirements over the coming decades.

The CAPINT’s three-member crew will be housed in an “armoured citadel” at the front of the vehicle, protected by passive composite armour as well as reactive and active protection systems. The active protection system will be developed by KNDS and distributed across the turret and hull, so that its defensive elements provide fuller coverage.
It is worth noting, meanwhile, that a Leclerc fitted with an anti-drone “cage” over the turret took part in the dynamic display of military equipment at Eurosatory in the second half of June 2026. ArmyInform EXPO covered this in detail in a special report.
KNDS says it will complete the CAPINT tank demonstrator as early as 2030. If France decides to take up the project, it could deliver the first series-production examples in 2035, which in turn would mean deployment with line army units in 2037.
There is also a plan to incorporate into CAPINT some of the advanced systems intended for the MGCS. The Main Ground Combat System is a joint Franco-German project to create a next-generation main battle tank that is due to replace the current Leopard 2 and Leclerc by the 2040s. It is meant to be not simply a tank in itself, but a network of combat vehicles integrating drones, missiles and laser weapons.
These elements will probably include fully integrated artificial intelligence, the passive, reactive and active protection systems mentioned above, counter-drone capabilities and the ability to engage targets beyond line of sight.

Another feature of the MGCS programme likely to be offered for the CAPINT tank is escort by unmanned ground vehicles. According to MGCS, one or two types of “robotic companion” are planned for the interim tank. These vehicles will be able to keep pace with the tank but will be simple enough in design to remain affordable. Their cost will also depend on different levels of passive protection.
The renewed attention to tank programmes reflects a broader revival of armoured warfare across Europe, driven largely by the lessons of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
While the course of the Russo-Ukrainian war has highlighted the vulnerability of tanks to drones, loitering munitions and precision anti-tank weapons, it has also shown that well-protected mobile firepower remains indispensable to combined arms operations.
As a result, European militaries that once cut their armoured fleets or postponed modernisation are now investing significantly in new main battle tanks and upgrades.
