President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with President of the European Council António Costa on 24 August.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the President of the European Council for congratulating Ukraine on the 35th anniversary of the restoration of its independence and for coming to Kyiv on this important day.

“I am very grateful to you, Mr President, for being here with us, with Ukraine, for supporting us from the very beginning — and we are counting on that. And thank you very much for all the messages that the European Union will be with us after this war. I hope that we will be in the European Union, but also that we will be together during Ukraine’s reconstruction,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed.

António Costa emphasised that the European Union continues to support Ukraine unwaveringly.

“We will continue to work together, and the most important thing is to win this war, because international law must prevail, and to achieve your accession to the European Union. Because that is the best path to Europe’s security and to guaranteeing Ukraine’s security,” the President of the European Council said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy and António Costa discussed international and domestic policy in detail. The President of the European Council is well informed about Ukraine’s priority needs for its defence, above all anti-ballistic capabilities and financial support in the coming months.

They also discussed how the European Union can help Ukrainian exports withstand Russia’s terrorist strikes on ports and agriculture. The head of state stressed the importance of finding solutions to all these challenges together within Europe.

As ArmyInform reported earlier, on Ukraine’s Independence Day the European Commission approved new defence procurements for Ukraine worth €6.1 billion. The funding will go towards air and missile defence systems, missiles, ammunition and radar stations.
