Air defense troops from the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade “Magura” shot down a rare Russian Orion strike and reconnaissance UAV.

Soldiers of Ukraine’s 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade “Magura” have destroyed a rare Russian Orion reconnaissance and strike drone, one of Moscow’s most capable unmanned aerial systems, during an aerial interception. The drone is estimated to be worth about $7 million.

According to the brigade, the interception was carried out by its Sky Wars air defense unit using an interceptor drone. Operators successfully tracked down the Russian UAV, caught up with it in flight, and destroyed it—despite the Orion’s higher speed and altitude, which normally place it beyond the reach of conventional interceptor drones.

The Orion, developed by Russia’s Kronstadt Group, is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned combat aircraft designed for both reconnaissance and strike missions. It can remain airborne for up to 24 hours and is capable of carrying guided bombs, missiles, and other precision-guided munitions, making it one of the more valuable assets in Russia’s drone fleet.

The 47th Brigade described the successful interception as another demonstration of how Ukrainian drone operators are increasingly neutralizing high-value Russian aerial assets using relatively inexpensive interceptor drones. The brigade released footage of the engagement, showing the interceptor striking the Orion in midair before the Russian UAV crashed.
