Nigerians in “Meat” Assaults — Rising Number of Dead Russian Mercenaries from Africa
In Luhansk region, military intelligence discovered the bodies of two Nigerian citizens — Hamzat Kazin Kalawole (born April 3, 1983) and Mbaha Steven Udoka (bor
This was reported on February 12 by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Both Africans served in the 423rd Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment (military unit 91701) of the 4th Guards Kantemirovskaya Tank Division of the Russian Armed Forces.
They signed contracts with the Russian army in the second half of 2025: Kalawole on August 29, Udoka on September 28.
Udoka underwent virtually no training — just five days later, on October 3, he was assigned to the unit and immediately deployed to the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
Documents on Kalawole’s training have not been preserved, but he most likely also received no proper military instruction. He left behind a wife and three children in Nigeria.
Both Nigerians were killed in late November during an attempt to assault Ukrainian positions in the Luhansk region. They never even entered small arms combat — the mercenaries were eliminated by a drone strike.
Ukrainian intelligence warns foreign citizens against traveling to Russia or working for the aggressor state. Going to Russia is a real chance to end up in a “suicide assault group” and ultimately rot in Ukrainian soil.
