President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney, during which the Prime Minister announced a new package of assistance to Ukraine.
This was reported on the website of the President of Ukraine.
The talks took place on December 27 in Halifax, on the eve of the Head of State’s visit to Florida, where a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled for December 28.
During the meeting, Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the Government and people of Canada for their consistent support of Ukraine throughout all the years of the full-scale war.
The President emphasized that on the night before the talks, Russia carried out another massive attack, using nearly 500 drones and dozens of missiles.
The Head of State stressed that these strikes are Russia’s response to international peace initiatives and demonstrate the Kremlin’s unwillingness to end the war.
Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney stated that there is currently an opportunity to achieve a just and lasting peace, but this requires genuine readiness on Russia’s part. He emphasized the importance of unity among international partners in supporting Ukraine amid the nighttime attack on Kyiv.
During the meeting, Mark Carney announced the allocation of CAD 2.5 billion in economic assistance to Ukraine and confirmed continued military support.
The sides paid special attention to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense, as well as existing diplomatic opportunities to bring a just peace closer. The leaders noted a shared position on key security and political issues.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Mark Carney also held a joint online conversation with European leaders.
During the discussion, the most fundamental elements of the draft key documents were discussed, which the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States will talk about the next day.
“Strong positions are needed both at the front and in diplomacy so that Putin cannot manipulate and avoid a real and just end to the war. The world has sufficient strength to guarantee security and peace”, — Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted.
The participants coordinated a common European position on the peace process and expressed support for U.S. efforts and for Ukraine.
Security guarantees that Europe will provide to Ukraine were also discussed, as well as a proposed schedule of meetings for the coming days and weeks.
