Foreign nationals who voluntarily sign a contract to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a term of three to five years receive full legal and social protection on par with Ukrainian servicemembers.
This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Financial and social support
Foreign servicemembers receive monetary allowances in accordance with the standards established for AFU personnel, including all additional payments предусмотрені by legislation for service under martial law.
Clothing, food supplies, and weapons are provided according to general standards. Foreigners are also entitled to leave on the same basis as Ukrainian servicemembers.
Career advancement and recognition of military ranks
Law № 4019-IX provides for the possibility for foreigners to serve in officer positions, provided they have appropriate military education and experience.
Military ranks obtained in other countries are subject to verification and may be recognized in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in accordance with established procedures.
If foreign citizens have no prior military experience, after enlistment they are sent to training centers and military units to acquire a military occupational specialty.
Path to Ukrainian citizenship
Contract service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine grants foreigners the right to immigrate and obtain a permanent residence permit in Ukraine. This right also extends to the servicemember’s family members — spouses and minor children.
Subsequently, after fulfilling the requirements defined by the Law of Ukraine “On Citizenship of Ukraine”, — foreign servicemembers and their family members may use a simplified procedure to acquire Ukrainian citizenship.
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that signing a contract guarantees foreigners full legal protection and the entire package of rights and social guarantees of an AFU servicemember.
