President of Ukraine calls on the EU to increase pressure on Russia: “Cold is a weapon in the war against civilians”
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the European Council meeting, called on EU leaders to increase pressure on Russia, stating that “Putin understands only the power of long-range weapons”.
He said this in his address.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia is trying to “turn cold into a weapon” and force Ukraine to enter the winter without electricity.
The President cited examples of deliberate strikes on civilians — a kindergarten in Kharkiv, a street in Sumy where people were killed in their own cars, and a journalists’ vehicle in Donetsk region.
“The Russians destroy, and we rebuild. Such terror against the energy system is already an element of future wars”, — he noted.
“Long-range weapons change the game”
The President called on partners to support the transfer of missiles and long-range systems to Ukraine.
“Some European countries also have long-range weapons, including Tomahawks. We are already in talks with those who can help. And just look how nervous Putin became when this topic came up, —” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Sanctions, Patriot, and frozen assets
He thanked the EU for the 19th package of sanctions and urged its swift implementation.
He also addressed partners regarding Patriot systems:
“If we receive them now, we are ready to return them later. During wartime, saving lives is the top priority”.
Zelenskyy also insisted on using Russia’s frozen assets to fund Ukraine’s defense:
“We plan to spend part of these funds on purchasing European weapons. This will help both us and you”.
At the end of his address, the President criticized the “artificial blocking” of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU and urged to find a way to move forward.
