They Treat Me as an Equal”: Ukrainian Drone Operator “Harley” on Serving Alongside Her Comrades
Drone operator Daria, call sign “Harley,” works alongside her comrades at positions in Sumy Region.
A video featuring her story was published by the 158th Separate Mechanized Brigade together with the 15th Army Corps.
Daria serves as a UAV operator in the Tenrai Unmanned Systems Battalion. She says that from the very beginning, she was treated like any other service member, with no restrictions on her duties or deployments to positions on the frontline.
“I wanted to go to a frontline — so I went, just like the guys. From the very first day, they treated me as an equal. That really impressed me.”
“Harley” herself asks her comrades not to make exceptions for her and wants to do the same work as everyone else. But sometimes things do not quite work that way. She recalls one such situation with a smile. While working at a position, everyone was carrying equipment, and Daria picked up a box of ammunition.
“I picked up the ammo box and started carrying it. All the guys just dropped what they were doing and ran over to me: “Give me the box, where are you taking it?” According to the servicewoman, this kind of attitude is normal in her unit. She does not even have to ask for help — her comrades step in on their own.
“Here in the unit, we have very warm, good and brotherly relationships. Everyone treats each other with respect.”
At the same time, “Harley” stresses that this support does not mean she is kept away from difficult tasks. She also deploys to positions, operates drones and carries out missions alongside the other members of the battalion.
“Everyone supports you — every initiative and every desire you have. The guys treat me even better than I expected.”
The Tenrai Unmanned Systems Battalion, part of the 158th Separate Mechanized Brigade, is currently carrying out combat missions in Sumy Region.
For “Harley,” equality within the unit is very simple: having the right to deploy to positions and work alongside everyone else — even if her comrades still try to take the heavy box out of her hands.
