Tracked to the Very End: How an Anubis Drone Killed Russian Major General Anton Grunis
Operators of the Rarok Brigade tracked the enemy general's movements over a long period and used an Anubis drone with a 40 kg warhead to strike him.
The deputy head of the command post of the 427th Rarok Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade, call sign “Zhenykh”, said this on an ArmyTV livestream.
According to him, the key objective of the operation was to hit the specific enemy command post where Russian Major General Anton Grunis was located.
“For us, the key task is to hit the command post itself. It was precision work by our pilots and strike drone systems, which zeroed out this general and gave him a small gift, so that he would not have to explain why the town he reported capturing is still under Ukrainian control,” Zhenykh said.
The Anubis is a modern Ukrainian medium-range strike drone (loitering munition) with elements of artificial intelligence.
Thanks to autonomous navigation and Starlink satellite communications, the drone is highly resistant to electronic warfare. It carries a high-explosive fragmentation warhead with an explosive charge of 30 to 50 kg.
Zhenykh noted that planning a strike on an enemy who is constantly on the move requires lengthy preparation and the ability to react quickly within short windows of time.
First, reconnaissance gathers data and works to confirm the target’s location. Once reliable information about the enemy’s plans has been obtained, preparation for the operation begins.
“This is where the race starts: you have to get ahead of the event, do the planning and bring in the personnel, who also carry a heavy workload, so that the time and assets are in the right place,” the unit representative explained.
A particular challenge, he said, is that Russian troops often set themselves up in captured Ukrainian homes and settlements. This places an additional burden on drone operators, who must minimise the risk to civilians remaining in the occupied territories when carrying out a strike.
Zhenykh stressed that the movements of enemy commanders are tracked over a period of time, and that such operations are not limited to a single target.
“An operation is planned over a long time, and the movements of these individuals are tracked — and that applies not only to this general who has been eliminated. I believe every commander of an enemy unit waging this war against us will face just punishment,” he said.
At the same time, he underlined that after lengthy preparation it is critical not to miss the moment to carry out the plan.
“At certain moments you have to seize the opportunity, make decisions quickly and implement them quickly — and that, so to speak, is how success is achieved against targets like these,” Zhenykh added.
