Volodymyr Zelenskyy outlined the results of talks with US President Donald Trump’s representatives in Kyiv, including efforts to resume negotiations.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this at a press conference on September 6 following a meeting in Kyiv with US President Donald Trump’s representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

The President of Ukraine held several rounds of meetings with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The visit began at Saint Sophia Cathedral, where the US President’s representatives were given a tour and told about the landmark dating back to the times of Kyivan Rus, founded in 1011.

The talks then continued in a bilateral format, followed by a joint meeting of the Ukrainian and US delegations with national security advisers to the President of France, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and the Chancellor of Germany.

“We may like some formats of negotiations more than others, but nevertheless, it is worse when there are no negotiation formats at all. I want to emphasize Steve and Jared’s role here, as they have revived the negotiation process today. Thank you for coming. And we are grateful to the President of the United States that you are here in Kyiv today,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

On Sunday, following the American team’s talks with the russian leader, all possibilities for resuming negotiations were discussed in Kyiv.

According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the territorial issue remains relevant. The Head of State emphasized that such complex issues can only be resolved at the leaders’ level.

“But the main thing is that today we have an opportunity to discuss everything: security guarantees, and we are indeed talking about Ukraine’s future. And we all want — and there is solidarity on this — we all want to end the war as quickly as possible. We are talking about a Prosperity Plan, we are talking not only about security guarantees, but also about economic guarantees for Ukraine to recover and rebuild. Our army, which must be strong, and this is our main security guarantee, and all of this requires resources,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

The meetings focused extensively on preparations for winter and all the challenges that may arise. Ukraine is counting on winter support from its partners, primarily to strengthen its air defence and energy sectors.

In particular, the President noted that Ukraine hopes for a significant volume and opportunities to use American LNG.

The Head of State also stressed the importance of the participation in the Kyiv talks of French President Emmanuel Macron’s diplomatic adviser Emmanuel Bonne, UK Prime Minister’s National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, and German Chancellor’s foreign and security policy adviser Günter Sautter. A separate round of talks was held with them.

“And we agreed that Ukraine, Europe and America will meet in the near future. I don’t know where the meeting will take place: in Europe, in the United States, or perhaps once again — Steve, as I understand, liked our train, so maybe again in Ukraine. We are open to any option,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Steve Witkoff noted that for US President Donald Trump, it is very important to resume negotiations to end the war.

“I would like to thank President Zelenskyy for his hospitality. We look forward to the opportunity to spend more time here. You are wonderful people, and we met many people here in Kyiv today. You are very resilient, and that is obvious. And especially courageous. We admire you,” the US President’s representative said.

Jared Kushner thanked Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his hospitality and the Ukrainian people for such a warm welcome.

According to him, the US side sees its task as creating a peace package.

“We are working to build this. And we are working with our European partners. This is a long, emotional war, and we are all trying to resolve it together. This is the framework. We have to create a framework that will help resolve this issue,” Jared Kushner said.

The US President’s representative also spoke about efforts to organize a trilateral format for negotiations.

“Steve and I tried to talk about a trilateral meeting. We were not trying to convince the russians of anything or convince the Ukrainians of anything. We were simply discussing these issues in a very friendly atmosphere, and I think it was productive,” he said.
