Ukrainian service members are undergoing practical training in Norway as part of Operation GUNGNE.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported this.

The training is delivered by members of the Norwegian Home Guard. Its aim is to strengthen the operational capabilities of Ukrainian troops, while the Ukrainians’ combat experience in turn helps Norwegian personnel refine their own skills.

Operation GUNGNE has been running since 2023. Most of the Ukrainian service members taking part already have combat experience and are building on it in line with NATO methods and standards.

The programme covers tactical combat casualty care (TCCC) for medics, training for infantry squad leaders, offensive and defensive tactics, small arms training and the operation of unmanned aircraft systems.

Particular attention is paid to FPV drones and munition-dropping systems, which are used to support infantry and engage targets.

GUNGNE is the training component of Norway’s ELLESSIV defence programme, which brings together all lines of military assistance to Ukraine. The programme is named after the Kyivan princess Elisabeth Yaroslavna.

While ELLESSIV covers overall support for Ukraine’s Defence Forces, GUNGNE focuses specifically on practical training for Ukrainian troops at Norwegian ranges.
