Ukraine's Register of Damage has opened a new category for expenses related to demining and clearing territories of unexploded ordnance.

This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

The new category, designated B5, is titled “Demining and Clearance of Unexploded Ordnance.”

Through it, Ukraine will be able to record expenses caused by the mine threat resulting from Russian aggression. In the future, this data could form the basis for compensation claims against the aggressor state.

Claims may be submitted by the Ukrainian state, central and local government bodies, and state institutions.

Claims may include state and local budget expenditures on demining territories, survey and mapping, the work of mine-action operators, disposal of explosive ordnance, training of specialists, and public awareness efforts on mine danger.

Claims are submitted through the Diia web portal. After verification, they will be entered into the Register of Damage and later forwarded for review to the International Commission, which will determine the amount of compensation.

The convention establishing this Commission under the auspices of the Council of Europe has already been signed by 39 states and the European Union.

The Ministry of Defense noted that its specialists took part in developing category B5, including work on classifying expenses, describing demining processes, and aligning approaches with the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS).
