The United Kingdom has announced a historic sanctions package that deprives the Kremlin of oil revenues and further restricts its ability to wage war against Uk
This is stated in a release on the website of the UK government.
This sanctions package is the largest since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Today’s measures target one of the world’s largest oil pipeline companies, PJSC Transneft, which is responsible for transporting over 80% of Russia’s exported oil.
The new measures also target 175 companies of the “2Rivers” oil network — one of the biggest operators of the shadow fleet in the world and one of the main traders of Russian crude oil.
Restrictions were imposed on 48 oil tankers that illegally transport Russian oil.
The sanctions list also includes six entities in Russia’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector, including vessels, traders, and the Russian terminals “Portovaya” and “Vysotsk”, responsible for exporting Russian LNG.
In addition, restrictions were imposed on nine Russian banks that process cross-border payments essential for Russia’s attempts to maintain access to international markets and finance the Kremlin’s military actions.
“International sanctions have deprived Putin of more than $450 billion — equivalent to another two years of funding for his illegal war”, — the UK government reported.
Since last year, the Russian economy has been stagnating, and state revenues have been rapidly declining, with oil revenues being the lowest since 2020. Trying to compensate for lost income, the Kremlin has been forced to raise taxes for Russians, including VAT and corporate income tax.
To date, the United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on over 3,000 individuals, entities, and vessels.
