July 15 marks Ukrainian Peacekeeper Day.

The date honors Ukrainian service members who, for decades, took part in international peace support operations around the world. Among the most significant chapters in this history are the missions carried out across the African continent, where Ukrainian troops gained operational experience that remains relevant to the Armed Forces of Ukraine today.

Ukraine joined United Nations peacekeeping operations in 1992. Since then, Ukrainian contingents and individual military specialists have participated in dozens of international missions. A special place among them belongs to operations in Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, South Sudan, and Côte d’Ivoire.

It was in Africa that Ukrainian service members carried out a wide range of missions—from patrols and the protection of key facilities to providing aviation support for peacekeeping forces.

The most prominent contribution came from the 18th Separate Helicopter Detachment, deployed as part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The unit conducted air transport of personnel, humanitarian cargo deliveries, medical evacuations, aerial reconnaissance, and close air support for UN peacekeeping contingents.

The detachment operated Mi-8 transport helicopters and Mi-24 attack helicopters. Their crews flew missions in challenging weather conditions over dense jungles and mountainous terrain, often in areas where illegal armed groups were active. The professionalism of Ukrainian pilots was crucial not only to the success of individual operations but also to the safety of international peacekeepers and civilians.

The exceptional level of training demonstrated by Ukrainian aviators was repeatedly recognized by UN mission leadership. During one inspection of the Ukrainian contingent, MONUSCO Chief of Aviation Azam Ayat praised Ukrainian pilots for their outstanding ability to conduct flight operations under difficult conditions, emphasizing that their contribution to the mission was of exceptional importance.

The work of Ukrainian peacekeepers was far from routine. In the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, UN peacekeeping forces regularly faced attacks by armed groups.

Ukrainian helicopter crews evacuated the wounded, delivered reinforcements to remote bases, and provided aerial support to UN units. These operations required flawless coordination, resilience, and the ability to perform under constant threat.

For this reason, the experience gained by Ukrainian service members during peacekeeping missions in Africa is regarded as unique. It combined real operational experience with multinational cooperation, adherence to UN procedures, and decision-making in an international environment. For many Ukrainian troops, these deployments became their first experience operating in conditions closely resembling actual combat.

After the onset of Russia’s aggression in 2014—and especially following the full-scale invasion in 2022—many veterans of these peacekeeping missions joined Ukraine’s defense. Their expertise in operational planning, army aviation, coordination with allied forces, and operating in high-threat environments has become a valuable component of the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s modern combat experience.

Today, Ukrainian Peacekeeper Day is not only a day of remembrance but also an opportunity to honor the service members who represented Ukraine on the international stage for many years. Their missions in Africa demonstrated the professionalism of the Ukrainian military and made a significant contribution to international peace and security. At the same time, the knowledge and experience they gained continue to strengthen Ukraine’s defense today.
