Patriot missiles, drones, and diplomacy: Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump hold meeting at NATO summit in Ankara
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump met on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Ankara, the capital of Türkiye.
The meeting was announced, among others, by the President of Ukraine on his official social media accounts.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the United States is discussing the possibility of strengthening Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities.
“We are discussing Ukraine’s ability to reach deep into Russia”, — Marco Rubio said.
According to Trump, Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries constitute an escalation but, at the same time, bring the war closer to an end. Secretary of State Marco Rubio added that Ukraine’s long-range strikes are forcing Moscow to recognize the vulnerability of its own airspace.
The United States is also considering providing Ukraine with licenses and technologies for the domestic production of missiles for Patriot air defense systems. In addition, Donald Trump highly praised Ukraine’s drone production capabilities and suggested that the United States could purchase Ukrainian-made drones.
Following his meeting with the President of Ukraine, Trump said he intended to call the Kremlin leader. The U.S. President stated that Russia’s conditions for peace had become less demanding and that Vladimir Putin was seeking a swift end to the war because of Russia’s increasingly difficult situation.
Donald Trump also expressed confidence that a peace agreement could be reached and stated that, in the event of a new Russian invasion after a peace settlement, the United States would allegedly be prepared to close the skies over Ukraine.
In addition, the U.S. President confirmed his willingness to visit Ukraine if such a trip during wartime were approved by his security service.
When asked about the possibility of Trump’s visit to Moscow, Volodymyr Zelenskyy replied: “Ukrainian drones are flying there”.
Trump also described his relationship with Zelenskyy as “excellent” and noted the significant progress made in negotiations over the past several weeks.
