The Ukrainian defense company Fire Point is developing its own ballistic missiles that could become a cheaper analogue of the American ATACMS and be produced in
This was stated by Denys Shtilerman, chief designer and co-founder of Fire Point, in an interview with Army TV.
The missiles belong to the FP-7 and FP-9 family.
The first can strike targets at distances of up to several hundred kilometers, while the larger model — up to 800 km.
According to Denys Shtilerman, the key idea behind the development is to make a ballistic missile as inexpensive as possible so that it can be produced in large quantities.
“This will be an analogue of ATACMS, probably even with a larger warhead. But it will cost at least twice as little”, — the designer explained.
The FP-7 has already passed testing and, according to the developer, may see combat use in the near future.
The larger FP-9 missile, with a range of up to 800 km, is currently preparing for tests.
The designer emphasizes that the key to modern warfare is not single missiles but mass production.
“If you produce two or three ballistic missiles a month, it makes no sense. It will not affect the front”, — Denys Shtilerman says.
That is why the focus is on the simplest possible design and cheaper production.
According to the developers’ concept, ballistic systems should operate as part of mobile groups.
The missiles are planned to be launched from mobile launchers disguised as ordinary trucks, making them difficult to detect.
“Everything should look like a regular civilian vehicle. Deployment — 15 minutes, launch — and you drive away”, — Denys Shtilerman explained.
