One year of the “Drone Line”: how $880 million in support enables the elimination of Russians on the frontline
The “Drone Line” is an initiative launched by the President of Ukraine aimed at scaling the most effective UAV units of the Ukrainian military.
This was reported by the Ministry of Defence.
A year ago, the “Drone Line” project — a large-scale program for financing Ukrainian-made UAV procurement for units within the Unmanned Systems Forces — was launched.
The initiative started in March 2025. Its goal is to systematically strengthen the use of UAVs in the Defense Forces, scaling the most effective combat practices and creating sustainable technological superiority on the battlefield.
During this time, the project has become one of the largest foreign direct financing mechanisms for the Ukrainian defense industry in the UAV sector.
The total financing is $880 million with support from the Netherlands. It covers mass procurement of FPV, ISR, and bomber UAVs.
Currently, more than 1,000 crews operate within the initiative. Units of the project eliminate almost every fourth Russian soldier on the frontline, and in January–February — every third.
During the winter alone, the Unmanned Systems Forces, which include “Drone Line” units, incapacitated about 30,000 occupiers.
The project aims to create a zone where the enemy cannot move without losses, while SBS forces can detect and destroy targets before they approach Ukrainian positions.
The development and scaling of the project is a key condition for stopping Russia on land to implement the war plan announced by Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
The “Drone Line” demonstrates Ukraine’s shift from fragmented UAV use to a systematic approach, where drones are a full element of defense tactics.
The initiative combines combat experience, technology, and international support, forming a model of modern warfare where technological advantage directly affects battlefield outcomes and saves Ukrainian soldiers’ lives.
