President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree enacting the related decision of the National Security and Defense Council.
This became known on the evening of February 16.
The decree concerns sanctions against ten Russian athletes who support Russia’s aggression, are involved in kidnapping Ukrainian children, and illegally visit temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
This sanctions package was based on a petition prepared by Ukrainian skeleton athlete and national Olympic team member Vladyslav Heraskevych.
Among those sanctioned are individuals who visited temporarily occupied parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions and Crimea; publicly justify Russian aggression and occupation; collect funds for Russian occupiers; and conduct activities for Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
“This Ukrainian sanctions package must be a signal to others worldwide — a signal that support for aggression cannot be ignored.
When Ukrainians at the Olympics are forbidden even to mention victims of Russian aggression, this is clearly a global retreat from justice. We will restore justice”, — Zelenskyy emphasized.
