Today, before the first official run, the International Olympic Committee announced its decision to disqualify the Ukrainian skeleton athlete allegedly for violating the regulations. The IOC believes that the “Helmet of Remembrance” violates Article 50 of the Olympic Charter, which prohibits political, discriminatory, and racial propaganda.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed his support for our Olympian.
“Sport does not mean forgetfulness, and the Olympic movement must help stop wars, not play along with the aggressor. Unfortunately, the decision of the International Olympic Committee to disqualify Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych says otherwise. This is certainly not about the principles of Olympism, which are based on fairness and the support of peace”, — the head of state wrote.
The athlete was also supported by the warriors of the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine posted a series of photos in which soldiers show gloves with the inscription: “Remembrance is not a violation”.
The Main Intelligence Directorate expressed support for our principled Olympian, who reminded the entire world about the Ukrainian athletes killed by Russia and about the war crimes committed by Moscow during the war it unleashed in Europe.
“The disqualification of a Ukrainian athlete for a helmet of remembrance is another clear example of the shameful double standards of IOC officials. Honor and respect to Vladyslav for his position! Such citizens are the real gold!” the post reads.
The Regional Directorate of the Territorial Defense Forces “South” of the Armed Forces of Ukraine expressed its support and gratitude to Vladyslav for his stance.
“We consider his act worthy of the memory of all soldiers who have died in the war. Dear Olympic officials, in your blind desire to stay out of politics, you are ignoring horrific crimes against humanity. But we will not let them be forgotten”, — the statement said.
The warriors of the 2nd Battalion “Knights of the Steppe” of the 122nd Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces also joined the flash mob in support of skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych.
The fighters of the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade also joined in supporting Ukrainian athletes who remind the world of all Ukrainians killed by Russia, showing signs reading: “With remembrance in the heart — forward to Victory” and “Remembrance is not a violation”.
“The IOC wants us to simply ignore the victims among these Ukrainians. No remembrance — no problem. But we remember our dead and killed. We fight for the living and for our land. We do not agree to forget, just as we did not agree to capitulate, although that is exactly what the world expected. Because we are Ukrainians”, — reads the message of the 225th Separate Assault Regiment on its Telegram channel.
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appealed to the IOC with a call to allow Ukrainian athletes to use symbols honoring the victims of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
