The commander of the platoon of engineering unmanned ground systems of the 61st Mechanized Steppe Brigade, call sign “Kaspar”, a graduate of the Hetman Petro Sahaidachny National Army Academy in Lviv, spoke about the role of robotic systems and UAVs in today’s technology-driven warfare.

The conversation with the officer was published on the brigade’s page on February 4.

According to “Kaspar”, engineering robotic systems and drones have become an integral part of performing combat tasks.

“I am responsible for mining and demining sections of the frontline. With the extremely high density of FPV drones in the sky, entering and actually mining any area becomes extremely difficult”, — the commander notes.

“Kaspar” emphasizes that the key role is played not only by the drones themselves but also by trained specialists who possess technical knowledge and engineering thinking.

“You need to understand that a UGS is just a tool. Without understanding the terrain, without understanding the technologies, and without proper preparation of the personnel, it won’t move or complete the mission,” he stresses.

The commander also notes that no system works “out of the box”—all robotic complexes require refinement and adaptation to specific terrain conditions and combat tasks.
