Sweden and Denmark announced joint purchase of Tridon air defense systems for Ukraine
Sweden and Denmark are jointly procuring Swedish-made Tridon Mk 2 anti-aircraft guns to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense.
This was stated in an announcement on the Swedish government’s website.
The Tridon Mk 2 is a new Swedish mobile air defense system manufactured by BAE Systems Bofors. It is based on a new version of the 40 mm Bofors gun, which has been used worldwide for more than 90 years. The gun is mounted on a Scania truck chassis, but the system can also be deployed on other platforms, including tracked vehicles.
The Tridon system is designed to counter drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and ground-attack aircraft, and can also be used for direct protection against ground threats. The Tridon systems being procured for transfer to Ukraine are additionally equipped with a command-and-control system and Saab Giraffe 1-X sensors. The systems also include spare parts and a large supply of ammunition, including modern programmable high-explosive rounds, known as 3P ammunition.
Sweden has financed the Tridon systems with a total value of SEK 2.1 billion (approximately $210 million) as part of three Swedish military aid packages. Denmark has decided to expand the procurement with additional Tridon units and extra equipment worth about SEK 480 million (approximately $48 million).
Deliveries of the systems to Ukraine will begin within 12 months. Stockholm emphasized that Sweden is ready to quickly order additional Tridon systems if other countries decide to join the joint procurement effort for Ukraine.
