Military counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine have collected evidence against a serviceman of the Russian Federation who on June 18, 2025, executed a captured soldier of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine during fighting in the Sumy region.

The SSU reported this on January 22.

The day after committing the crime, the invader himself was captured by the Defense Forces. While in custody, he attempted to conceal his guilt in order to avoid the maximum punishment.

However, SSU officers reconstructed the full chronology of the suspect’s actions and documented the fact of the murder of the Ukrainian prisoner of war.

According to the investigation, the war crime was committed by Russian citizen Ivan Khamgushkeev (call sign “Buryat”) — senior rifleman of the 2nd company of the marine infantry of the 5th reinforced marine infantry battalion of the 810th Separate Marine Brigade of the Black Sea Fleet of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

According to the case materials, on June 18, 2025, the invader, as part of an assault group, attacked positions of the Defense Forces near the settlement of Myropillia in the Sumy region.

During the battle, a Ukrainian border guard was captured by the occupiers. Khamgushkeev, together with another invader, first interrogated the captive and then executed him using standard-issue firearms.

It was established that “Buryat” and his accomplice shot the prisoner at point-blank range with Kalashnikov assault rifles and then reported the liquidation of the Ukrainian soldier to their command by radio.

As a result of the gunshot wounds, the prisoner died at the scene. The next day, Ukrainian defenders pushed the enemy out of the occupied positions and detained Khamgushkeev as one of the few survivors of the hostile unit.

Based on long-term and thorough evidence collection, SSU investigators served the suspect with a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes resulting in death, committed by a group of persons).

The perpetrator is being held in custody and faces life imprisonment.
