‘Structurally similar to the Type-63’: rare MLRS destroyed in the Southern Slobozhanshchyna direction
A multiple launch rocket system mounted on a UAZ van chassis was destroyed by drone operators of the 3rd Separate Heavy Mechanized Iron Brigade.
Details of the combat episode were provided in an exclusive comment to ArmyInform by the brigade’s spokesperson, Major Ihor Romanenko.
“According to the unit, it was an MLRS structurally similar to the Type-63 — a multiple launch rocket system developed in China back in the 1960s. It is not unique, though quite rare. Today, about a dozen countries produce analogues; for example, North Korea manufactures the Type-75”, — he said.
The primary modification of the Type-63 MLRS is based on a towed carriage, but sometimes it is mounted on light vehicle chassis.
“It is a package of 12 short-barrel launch tubes for 107-mm rockets. Usually they are mounted on a light carriage, making the Type-63 resemble a towed artillery piece. However, in our case, the launch tubes appear to have been mounted on a UAZ chassis, known as a ‘Bukhanka’”, — the officer reported.
The location of the MLRS was identified after it carried out a salvo.
“We calculated it based on the salvo. There was a salvo of six rockets, and our aerial reconnaissance detected where it was fired from. After that, it was a matter of technique to locate and destroy it”, — the serviceman explained.
Nearby, an enemy ammunition depot was also destroyed.
It is likely that the depot primarily stored ammunition for this particular MLRS.
“There was an ammunition depot nearby, which was also destroyed. This is recorded on video, which we will publish soon. It was a large ground depot covered with camouflage netting. When drones flew inside, the video clearly shows crates and even short munitions laid out from the crates, very similar to those used for the Type-63 or Type-75 MLRS”, — the spokesperson reported.
