A Ukrainian defender from the “Forpost” Brigade, callsign “Mykyta”, not only managed to single-handedly eliminate a group of enemy assault troops, but also made extremely effective use of their radio to warn his comrades of danger.
The State Border Guard Service shared his recollections of urban combat in Vovchansk.
“Mykyta” notes that engagements with the enemy amid dense urban development were extremely difficult.
“We entered Vovchansk, right into the city. Adjacent units were behind us, and we were in the first ranks — as they say, first with honor. The nearest enemy positions were 12 meters away from us”, — the fighter recalls.
According to him, while holding the defense, Ukrainian warriors destroyed enemy infantry wave after wave, but most of it was ordinary “cannon fodder.” That changed when he discovered a radio among one of the eliminated enemy groups.
“No one else had radios. And this group was well equipped. With full backpacks. It turned out that I destroyed the entire group by myself. I took their radios — they had radios. I listened in and passed everything on. I knew where their headquarters was. When they planned to move next. When they wanted to hit our guys. And I told the guys to go down into the basements, because mortars were about to hit them. That’s how I saved their lives”, — Mykyta recalls.
