Why can’t the war be won with drones alone, and what role do assault units play in modern warfare? How…
Journalist Serhii, under the pseudonym “Lego”, who mobilized on the first day of the full-scale invasion and became commander of an assault platoon, told how he returned to the front after a fragment struck his heart and he suffered a stroke, and about an 18-hour battle in which his group destroyed more than 50 occupiers.
The warrior’s story was published on the page of Air Command “West.”
From editor to assaultman
Serhii, a former editor at a Ukrainian outlet, was mobilized on February 24, 2022, and later became commander of an assault platoon in a combined rifle brigade of the Air Force. He took part in fighting on the Tavriisk direction — from Avdiivka to Vuhledar.
In July 2023, near Staromaiorske, he received severe wounds: “a mine fragment hit the ankle joint, and 18 fragments from VOG munitions hit the rib area. At that moment an enemy drone tried to finish them off. Then one of the fragments struck ‘Lego’s’ heart, causing a stroke three days later”, — the report says.
After rehabilitation he returned to the front.
The hardest moment came on January 12, 2024, when his group found itself encircled.
“‘Shtorm-Z’ attacked in waves — more than ten waves of 5–6 assault fighters in each. The battle lasted 18 hours. We destroyed over 50 enemies, but lost 13 comrades. Five of us, including me, came out wounded”, — Serhii recounts.
They managed to hold the positions and break the encirclement.
He names the thirst for revenge as his motivation.
“I took satisfaction from the opportunity to destroy the enemy. Too many loved ones have died”, — he admits.
After the victory he dreams of returning to his family and helping to rebuild Ukraine — perhaps by starting his own business or returning to journalism.
