Britain strikes at the heart of Putin’s economy: “Rosneft” and “Lukoil” under sanctions

The United Kingdom has decided to increase pressure on the Kremlin’s revenues and announced new sanctions against Russia’s largest oil companies and global enterprises supporting Putin’s war.

This was reported in a statement published on the UK government’s website.

“90 new sanctions strike at the very heart of Putin’s war financing, directly targeting Rosneft and Lukoil — two of the world’s largest energy companies, which together export 3.1 million barrels of oil per day. Rosneft alone accounts for 6% of global oil production and nearly half of Russia’s total output”, — the statement reads.

The sanctions also target four oil terminals in China, 44 “shadow fleet” tankers transporting Russian oil, and Nayara Energy Limited, which in 2024 alone imported 100 million barrels of Russian oil worth over $5 billion.

“At this critical moment for Ukraine, Europe is stepping up its efforts. Together with our allies, we are increasing pressure on Putin by targeting his oil, gas, and shadow fleet — and we will not stop until he abandons his failed war of conquest and starts taking peace seriously”, — said UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

The British government emphasized that the sanctions were introduced just ahead of the Russian Energy Week in Moscow, undermining Putin’s attempts to promote his most valuable source of funding among countries around the world.

As Putin’s vital oil revenues continue to shrink each year under the pressure of international sanctions, the Kremlin is trying to expand its liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector to compensate for these losses.

Therefore, the UK has also imposed sanctions on seven specialized LNG tankers and the Beihai LNG terminal in China, which imports LNG from Arctic LNG 2 — Russia’s flagship LNG project that London sanctioned in February 2024.
