You might have seen that the US is already helping a lot. This is true. Ukrainians are thankful a lot. But it’s not enough for Ukraine to protect the whole world from a massive threat to humanity.
Russia’s air force is enormous, over ten times as large as Ukrainian air force. Without sufficient anti-aircraft systems, Russia will have free reign to destroy everything – artillery, command posts, tanks and entire Ukrainian cities. That is precisely why at the beginning of the invasion Russia was trying hard to achieve air dominance. If they succeed, it will just be a matter of time until Russia wins the war.
The Buk (“Бук”; “beech” (tree), /bʊk/) is a family of self-propelled, medium-range surface-to-air missile systems developed by the Soviet Union and its successor state, the Russian Federation, and designed to counter cruise missiles, smart bombs, fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
NASAMS (National/Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) is a distributed and networked medium to long range surface-to-air missile defense system. NASAMS was the first surface-based application for the AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile).
The system integrates US-built MPQ-64 Sentinel air defense radar and AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles with an indigenously developed Battle management C4I system called FDC, short for Fire Distribution Center. The FDC connected to a MPQ-64 radar forms an “Acquisition Radar and Control System” (ARCS). The missile has a horizontal range of up to 25 km. Other sources cite a range of ‘over 15 km’ but this depends on the missile version used.
Currently, anti-aircraft systems are responsible for protecting Ukraine from cruise missiles, which Russia has in huge quantities and has been using with complete disregard for civilians. This military support will enable Ukraine to reclaim territory lost since February 24th and bring Russia to the negotiating table — not as a superpower throwing ultimatums, but as a neighbor willing to make real concessions. However, without additional weaponry, this war will become an endless bloodbath, spreading misery, suffering, and destruction.
