The UK Announces a New Support Package for Ukraine on the Fourth Anniversary of Russia’s Invasion
The Government of the United Kingdom has announced a new package of military and humanitarian support ahead of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale inv
This was stated in an announcement published on the UK government’s website.
On 24 February, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will chair a meeting of the “Coalition of the Resolute” together with French President Emmanuel Macron, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will be on a visit to Kyiv, and Defence Secretary John Healey will join Ukrainians in London.
The support package announced today includes:
- £20 million in new funding for emergency energy support to protect and repair the energy grid and provide additional electricity-generation capacity — to repair the damage caused by Russia’s brutal attacks this winter and to secure Ukraine’s energy systems for the next winter.
- £5.7 million in humanitarian aid for frontline communities, those needing evacuation, or those affected by airstrikes or internal displacement.
- Medical advisory support — highly qualified teams of British military surgeons, nurses, and physiotherapists will advise Ukrainian medical personnel. They accompany Ukrainian teams performing complex battlefield surgeries, using British expertise in trauma surgery and wartime injury treatment to help Ukrainian service members return to duty or rebuild their lives as civilians.
- Helicopter pilot training — Ukrainian pilots are currently undergoing training at a British airbase to become helicopter-flight instructors. This is the first time the United Kingdom has offered instructor-level helicopter training to Ukraine. The graduates will train the next generation of Ukrainian military pilots, helping Ukraine defend itself and deter aggression.
“This was a war Putin thought he would win in a week, but he underestimated the resolve of the Ukrainian people. With our support, they continue to fight with enormous courage”, — said UK Defence Secretary John Healey.
