In the Kostiantynivka sector, the enemy’s main objective is to bypass the city from the flanks and cut off the Defense Forces’ logistics. However, Ukrainian defenders are successfully countering the Russian occupiers, thwarting their assault attempts.
This was reported on Army TV by Major Viacheslav Shutenko, commander of the unmanned systems battalion “Legion North” of the 44th Separate Mechanized Brigade.
“The enemy does not abandon attempts or hopes to assault the settlement of Kostiantynivka, as well as nearby settlements, in order to cut off the city’s logistics and, accordingly, make it easier to enter the city itself”, — he said.
To this end, the occupiers are trying to storm the city with small infantry assault groups. The Russians are also using motorcycles.
“At the same time, these attempts are currently being suppressed in this sector. Specifically, in the area where we are operating together with the third mechanized battalion of our brigade, assault actions by small assault groups and assaults using motorcycles are constantly taking place”, — the officer reported.
In particular, on January 16, the Russians tried to break into Kostiantynivka on motorcycles, but were detected in time and neutralized.
“Literally today they tried to assault our positions on motorcycles. At the same time, they were detected in time and partially neutralized already. We saw where some of them hid, which shelters they used, and we continue to eliminate them. I am confident that we are accomplishing this task and will neutralize the assault groups that tried to enter today”, — the serviceman assured.
The enemy is also trying to take the city in a “pincer movement” and cut off logistics.
“In general, if we talk about the enemy’s plans, they are trying to take Kostiantynivka in so-called ‘pincers’. I think everyone is familiar with their tactics aimed at cutting off logistics. Accordingly, our task is to prevent this”, — Viacheslav Shutenko emphasized.
The officer noted that the enemy partially managed to do this from the Chasiv Yar direction, but from the other side the Russians have not achieved success so far.
“If we look at the battlefield map, everyone has access to DeepState, where it can be seen that from one side, from the direction of Chasiv Yar, this penetration toward logistical routes occurred earlier. They are now trying to carry out a similar penetration from the other side, but so far without success”, — he noted.
Nevertheless, the Russians do not abandon attempts to probe Ukrainian defenses, acting mainly under the cover of weather conditions favorable for concealed movement—fog and strong winds.
“It is also important to note that the enemy is trying to take advantage of adverse weather conditions, in particular very windy weather as well as foggy conditions, which unfortunately occur quite often now. Under the cover of these weather conditions, they are trying to infiltrate between combat formations and enter the city”, — reported the commander of the unmanned systems battalion “Legion North”.
Despite weather conditions favorable for the Russians and their use of camouflage means, including anti-thermal cloaks, the enemy is detected and destroyed mainly with the help of UAVs.
“The enemy’s plans are clear. Kostiantynivka plays a fairly important role for the occupiers in their further plans to expand the offensive into parts of the unoccupied Donbas. Therefore, we understand that the pressure will increase, and we are actively preparing for this, using various methods—remote mining, installation of engineering obstacles, and so on. In other words, we are preparing for an intensification of hostilities in the Kostiantynivka sector this year”, — the officer concluded.
