During the first combined Russian attacks in 2026, enemy forces for the first time used Geran-5 strike UAVs against Ukraine.
This was reported on Sunday, January 11, by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
According to available data, the new enemy development has a length of about 6 meters and a wingspan of up to 5.5 meters. Its warhead weighs approximately 90 kg, and its declared strike range is about 1,000 km.
“Most key units and components are unified with other models of this series. In particular, the use of a 12-channel ‘Kometa’ satellite navigation system has been identified, as well as a tracker based on a Raspberry microcomputer and 3G/4G modems, and a Telefly jet engine similar to that used on the Geran-3 UAV, but with greater thrust”, — the statement says.
At the same time, it is noted that, as with previous versions, this UAV can hardly be considered a domestic Russian development due to significant structural and technological similarities with the Iranian Karrar UAV.
“According to available information, the enemy is also working on options for deploying the Geran-5 from aircraft carriers, in particular Su-25 aircraft, to increase range and reduce costs. Separately, the possibility of equipping the UAV with R-73 air-to-air missiles to counter Ukrainian aviation is being considered”, — DIU reported.
