On the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, European politicians were able to see with their own eyes the consequences of Russian strikes.
This was reported on February 24 by First Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.
The ruins of the CHP plant were visited together with him by President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Council António Costa, President of Finland Stubb, as well as the heads of government of Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Norway, Croatia, Sweden, ministers and other high-ranking guests.
“I showed them the consequences of Russian strikes. At such facilities, war stops being statistics or a picture on a screen. Here you can see that Russia is waging war against light, against heat, against normalcy and the ability to live”, — Denys Shmyhal noted.
According to him, the destroyed CHP plant supplied heat to 500,000 people in Kyiv. Over four years, Russia carried out 13 missile and drone attacks on it, 9 of them in the past six months.
In January, due to another strike, the plant stopped generating electricity. And at the beginning of February, five ballistic missiles hit it — halting heat production.
More than 1,100 apartment buildings, 118 schools and kindergartens, and 18 hospitals were left without heating.
“This is at the same time a crime scene and evidence of Russian barbarism, but also a place of our resilience, partnership, and solidarity. After each strike — repairs, often under the threat of repeated attacks. And I am grateful to every country providing the equipment needed for restoration”, — Denys Shmyhal said.
According to him, over 40 countries and organizations support Ukraine’s energy sector this winter. In 2025, about €600 million was mobilized through the Energy Support Fund.
Since the start of the full-scale war, Ukraine has received over 2,000 humanitarian shipments for the energy sector.
