The Ministry of Defense has approved the new Zmiy Droid 12.7 strike and reconnaissance unmanned ground robotic system (UGV) of Ukrainian production for operation within the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
This was reported on the Ministry’s website.
The UGV is designed to perform a wide range of military tasks in high-intensity combat conditions.
Zmiy Droid 12.7 was developed by engineers from two Ukrainian defense manufacturers with significant experience in producing and operating ground platforms in high-intensity warfare.
The system is built on the combat-proven Zmiy platform and is equipped with a remotely controlled Wolly combat module armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun.
The ground platform features high cross-country capability and can traverse difficult off-road terrain, sand, snow, and shallow water obstacles. The platform’s hull is armored, protected against anti-personnel mines, and capable of withstanding hits from several FPV drones.
A key feature of the Zmiy Droid 12.7 unmanned ground robotic system is its control module, which allows the operator to simultaneously control both the platform and the combat module. This reduces decision-making time on the battlefield.
The combat module is equipped with artificial intelligence systems and is capable of acquiring and tracking targets automatically.
Such strike unmanned ground robotic systems have proven effective in modern warfare. Documented cases include the destruction of a Russian MT-LB multipurpose lightly armored tracked vehicle using the Droid TW 12.7 reconnaissance-strike UGV.
Another successful combat example of the Droid TW 12.7 UGV was holding a firing position continuously for 45 days. During this mission, the UGV was returned to the crew once every two days for several hours for maintenance, ammunition resupply, and battery charging.
The primary mission of such UGVs is to replace soldiers on the battlefield in areas of the highest risk of enemy fire.
