The number of female officers among servicewomen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has increased significantly in recent years.

This was stated by Oksana Hryhorieva, Gender Adviser to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in the podcast “1325” on Hromadske Radio.

“Since 2019, we have had graduates — young female officers who have already advanced in their careers. They started with initial ranks and then served in their specialties. Now they already hold the ranks of major or captain. We have this whole cohort of female officers,” Oksana Hryhorieva said.

She also noted that significant growth occurred during the full-scale invasion.

“And now I want to tell you — we have very impressive statistics. If two years ago we spoke about 4%, today 21% of all women serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine are officers. This is very serious progress”, — she said.

According to her, servicewomen already command platoons and companies, and there are even commanders of military units.

“It is true that in the Air Force this is in psychological support, but it is still a unit commander. This is very important. And in the Territorial Defense Forces there is a female battalion commander. That is, opportunities are now being given. Because earlier, as you know, everyone was convinced that they fight well, but were not really allowed into command. Over time, these stereotypes are changing”, — the adviser to the General Staff emphasized.
