The 78th Independent Air Assault Regiment has officially been expanded into the 78th Independent Air Assault Brigade. Thus, the unit has opened a new chapter in its history within the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

This was reported on the official page of the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

From volunteers to a brigade

The unit was formed in the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. At that time, the backbone of what was then the 78th Air Assault Regiment consisted of volunteers who, without hesitation, stood up to defend Ukraine.

In the summer of 2025, as part of the corps reform, the regiment became part of the 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces.

In December 2025, the unit was officially expanded into a brigade, which became a logical stage in its development.

Command assessment

The Corps Commander, Brigadier General Yevhen Lasiichuk, noted that this decision confirms the level of the unit:

“This is confirmation of the unit’s combat maturity and its ability to operate as a coordinated striking fist. It is recognition of the level of training, experience, and effectiveness of the personnel, who are capable of carrying out the most complex tasks. The foundation of this result is the character of the soldiers, their resilience, and their responsibility for the defense of Ukraine”.

The expansion of the 78th unit into a brigade marks its transition to a new organizational and combat level within the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
